Digital Printing
- What are the benefits of Markham Bailey’s digital process?
- Markham Bailey uses digital equipment to produce the highest-quality labels and tapes possible without the absurd plate and die charges that conventional label converters charge. Furthermore, due to the low cost of producing small runs, Markham Bailey’s staff is capable of working with you throughout the branding process to define the look and feel of your brand.
- What applications are digital printing best for?
- Due to the low cost of small-runs and custom shapes, digital printing is an excellent option for companies who want a high quality label conversion, without the expensive plate and die charges or minimum orders. Markham Bailey is also perfect for trial-branding, prototyping, limited editions and specialty products. With no die or plate charges the cost of custom, small-runs of high quality labels is affordable.
- How does digital printing differ from traditional printing?
- Digital imaging is the cutting edge of the printing industry. By using digital equipment, Markham Bailey is capable of producing high-quality, 4-Color Process, photorealistic images. Unlike most conventional print-shops, Markham Bailey does not use plates or dies to image and process labels. Without plates and dies, the overall cost of high-quality label production drops dramatically. Furthermore, since there are no dies or plates to be made, you have ultimate freedom to brand your product and differentiate it from the rest.
- What are dies and plates, why doesn’t Markham Bailey charge die or plate charges?
- A die is a steel blade used to punch out the desired shape of a label. A plate is often made of metal, rubber or plastic and is used to “stamp” the image on the label substrate. Since Markham Bailey used digital equipment to convert labels, there is no need for dies or plates and therefore, no need for die or plate charges.
- How do I choose a size for my digital label?
- Getting a custom size or shape label is a breeze at Markham Bailey. Our equipment can handle labels up to 8 inches wide and 24 inches long. All you have to worry about is what size or shape label best fits your product. There is no settling for a pre-determined size or shape, like with a conventional label converter.
- What kind of proof will I get?
- You will get a free digital PDF proof as a part of your quote. It will arrive via email after submitting a quote here. Converting a physical proof requires valuable resources and time. Therefore Markham Bailey charges a $55 proofing fee for a physical proof. The only way to make sure that your label meets expectations before going to print is to have a proof made, therefore Markham Bailey does label proofing by request and highly recommends that all new labels be proofed for color-matching purposes. If you wish to receive a physical proof, go to our Quote Tool and select the box for “Request a Color Proof”.
- Can Markham Bailey print white, gold or silver ink?
- Our digital printer is 4-Color Process or CMYK. This means that the only colors we can print are Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black or some combination of those inks. Since white, gold and silver cannot be mixed from CMYK colors, our printer cannot print them. However, if you have a label that requires the use of white, gold or silver ink we can print the reverse on white, gold or silver film. Furthermore, if for some reason printing a reverse is not possible, Markham Bailey will outsource the conversion.
- Can Markham Bailey print on foil?
- We cannot currently print on foil. However, we can print on metalized poly, which gives virtually the same look and feel as foil.
Art Files and Design
- How can I submit art files to Markham Bailey?
- At Markham Bailey we understand that all businesses, just like all people, are different. Some people use Macs, others use PCs and some refuse to use a computer at all. Our staff does its best to accommodate all methods of file-transfer. Some of the methods we currently use include: email, YouSendIt, DropBox, QNext, as well as uploading to our site here. If there are any other methods that you prefer, please let us know by emailing us at info@markhambailey.com.
- Can I send a CD with my files on it?
- Yes. If you feel more comfortable sending your files by CD, we’ll happily accept.
- What format should I send my art files in?
- All art files must be in .EPS (Encapsulated Post Script) format. Markham Bailey recommends using Adobe Illustrator to save all art files as .EPS before submitting them for quotes, proofs or orders. For more information on how to properly set up an .EPS file go here.
- What are Raster Graphics?
- Raster graphics are made using pixels. All the tiny pixels merge together when your brain processes the image to create a smooth image in your head. Most images you see, especially photographic images are raster graphics. The major downside to raster graphics is resizing them. When making a raster image larger or smaller; pixels are enlarged or converged, which distorts the overall image. Markham Bailey recommends avoiding the use of raster graphics in label designs in order to improve the overall image quality. However, if a label requires raster graphics, the images resolution must be set to a minimum of 300 DPI before importing the image into Adobe Illustrator.
- What are Vector Graphics?
- Vector graphics are mathematically defined shapes. Because of this, they are not as detailed as raster graphics and photographic imagery is nearly impossible to create using vector graphics. However, since vector graphics are defined mathematically rather than by a grid of pixels, it is possible to enlarge or shrink a vector image without there being any visual distortion.
- What is an .EPS file?
- EPS stands for Encapsulated Post Script. An .EPS file allows for vector graphics to be saved, while preserving all the vector and color information so that it doesn’t get lost when being opened again.
- Can Markham Bailey help design my labels?
- Markham Bailey works with a team of designers, graphic-technicians, artists and branding specialists. If you need help with a label design or setting up an art file, please email us at info@markhambailey.com and we’ll help in any way we can.
- What is Corner Radius?
- Corner radius refers to the degree of roundness a corner has. The greater the corner radius, the more rounded the corner will be. The standard corner radius used by Markham Bailey is 1/16”. A corner radius of 1/16” is both aesthetically pleasing and helps to keep the label from being pulled off or torn. For more information on the different types of corner radii, see our Corner Radius Guide.
- Will Markham Bailey match a Pantone or special color?
- CMYK presses can reproduce about 35% to 50% of the Pantone Spot Color book. Our equipment is capable of reproducing around 46% of Pantone Spot Colors. There are many factors that can affect color matching, so we recommend requesting a color proof by filling out our Quote Tool and selecting the box to request a color proof.
- What is 4-Color Process or CMYK?
- 4-Color Process or CMYK imaging creates images by applying cyan, magenta, yellow & black toner to the substrate. Because of this, it is not possible to create colors which cannot be mixed from those four colors. In order to create white on a CMYK printer, the image must be printed on a white substrate.
- What are spot colors?
- A spot color is a pure or mixed ink color which is printed in a single run. CMYK imaging uses 4 spot colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) to create all other colors.
Ordering
- Is there a minimum order?
- The equipment at Markham Bailey is all digital. Therefore we have no dies or plates that need to be made. This decreases the turn-over time for labels, the over-all cost of custom labels and means that we don’t require a minimum order.
- Will my order come on rolls or on sheets?
- Our equipment tightly rolls your labels onto a standard 3” diameter core. If for some reason you need your order sheeted, Markham Bailey has sheeting capabilities. If you need an order sheeted, be sure to include that information in the “Notes” section of our Quote Tool or Order Form.
